Trekking back in time to Visapur Fort |
Posted: November 15, 2019 |
I have been trekking since college and along with a group of equally enthusiastic trekker friends, I start exploring more and more trekking destinations in Maharashtra. I’ve been to many spectacular locations, but there is one that I cherish more than others. The Visapur trek In my early days of trekking, one of the easiest treks I’d been on is the Visapur trek. After that, I return there at least twice a year. Visapur Fort is close to Lonavala, so you’ll get great views from all around. The monsoon is one of best times to go, because it’s so green and pretty, but you should be prepared to get drenched. There are some rock-cut steps to the summit but it’s still an easy one for beginners. During the monsoon, you will witness lush green landscapes and the view is simply captivating.
Visapur is the sister fort of Lohagad fort, and is about 3500 feet high. It was built by the Peshwas in the 1700s, and was ruled by Shivaji Maharah, as well as the Mughals and the British. For someone who loves exploring and has a keen interest in history, this is a great option for trekking in Maharashtra. You will find caves, cannons and many such thrilling experiences on your Visapur Trek. This is a perfect adventurous weekend gateway for people staying in Pune and Mumbai. I’ve also taken my family there, and it was pretty easy for them to do, so it’s one of my preferred recommendations for trekking in Maharashtra. The base for this trek is Bhaje, and it’ll take you about 3 hours to reach the Visapur Fort. Even if you haven’t done a trek before this is an easy one to start with. Itinerary
Day 1: Mumbai to Bhaje Some trek operators start from Dadar itself. This is easy because you board the bus early in the morning, around 6 a.m, and then sleep till about 10 am. When you reach Bhaje, you’ll be ready for some hot chai and breakfast. The trek begins after this. Bhaje to Visapur Fort You’ll begin the trek around 10:30 hrs to Visapur Fort. The route is filled with greenery and from the top one can see the Pavna Lake. For the average trekker, you should reach the top at 13:30 hrs. There is so much to explore at the fort like caves, ancient carvings and cannons to name a few. The structure is destroyed but the rampart is intact. Take pictures, explore and delve into history on the Visapur trek. Visapur Fort to Bhaje At the top, you’ll settle down for lunch. You’ll be really hungry and ready to eat. After that, some people chill and some people explore Visapur top for some time. Then you’ll all get together and begin to descend down again. You should reach Bhaje by 16:30 hrs, and that’s just in time for tea and snacks. Bhaje to Mumbai By 17:00 or 18:00 hrs, you’ll begin the road journey back to Mumbai. Visapur Trek is one of the best destinations for trekking in Maharashtra and an easy one too. You can go solo, with family or friends and have a great time exploring the history of Maharashtra.
