Bicycles were introduced in the early 19th century for recreational purposes. It is something everyone used as their means for transport from one point to another. The history about the bicycles origin is quite disputed. Some say the first mechanical bicycle was created by a Scottish blacksmith in Glasgow in 1839 and was also the first person to be fined for a cycle related traffic offense. By the turn of the 19th Century, bicycles had become an object of need for almost every working man.
With the sale of automobiles at an all-time high, you can see the shift in people's desire to save time and achieve comfort. But in the process, people tend to forget the benefits that come attached with cycling. Not only is it beneficial for cardiovascular purposes and has many other health benefits too. It promotes weight loss and helps in burning a lot of fat. A normal cycling session can burn anywhere from 600 to 1100 calories. Cycling is counted as one of the exercises that help in keeping heart ailments under control. Contrary to popular belief, cycling is an exercise that involves the whole body and not just the feet. It helps majorly in building body health and is useful in releasing the stress that a person takes on in their various walks of life. It is known to build up the muscles in your heart and decrease the fat levels in your blood. Cardiovascular fitness improves significantly due to the constant pounding of the heart. It is also noted that muscle strength is increased due to better functionality of the joints, knee caps and hips during cycling.
Let us take insight from personal experience. I started cycling at the age of 6. At first it was just the building compound which later turned into the area I live in. My reach grew with my age. Earlier a few laps around the building would wear me out. Now, I can easily do 10 kilometers with ease. My bike was my source of freedom. It helped me escape the harsh reality of school, studies, homework etc. By the time I finished school, cycling was forgotten as I was coming into adolescence and shortly had my eyes set on a new mode of transport. By the time I hit 18, I had a driver's license and had my eyes set on a source of freedom – A motorbike. It was a learning experience like never before. The injuries were far more serious this time around. A simple miscalculation could cost you your life. That empowerment when you twist the accelerator has a completely different feeling. Quite different than using the pedals to attain speed. My cycle was always under the bicycle cover now and my loyalty was completely shifted towards the motorbike. The bulge around my body started to increase and the decrease in stamina is quite visible now. I genuinely want to start cycling again and can’t wait for the good times to roll again. A lot of memories come rushing as soon as I see my bicycle. In these times, there are an abundance of bicycle accessories which help the rider various ways. Right from heart monitors to bottle holders, there is availability of cycling gear around the world. These help in the effort to build your body as well monitor the overall process.
