It has been fifteen years since Emraan Hashmi made his acting debut in Vikram Bhatt’s thriller Footpath starring alongside Aftab Shivdasani and Bipasha Basu in 2003. Although the movie garnered moderate box office success, Hashmi’s performance was noticed and appreciated. The next year saw Hashmi appearing in what was to make him a household name across the country. Murder Murder was India’s first erotic thriller. With Emraan Hashmi in a role that seemed tailor made for him, his enactment of the obsessive lover was the impetus that drove the movie to super hit status in record time and became a film franchise spawning over two sequels. Shanghai In 2012, Hashmi appeared alongside Abhay Deol, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Kalki Koechlin in Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai. Adapted from Vasssilis Vassiliko’s novel Z and set in a fictional town named BharatNagar, this political thriller takes a deep look at corruption in India. Hashmi plays Joginder Parmar, a videographer who shoots porn films when not shooting political ad campaigns. A knockout performance, Hashmi was pitch perfect as the complicated, brave, slimy low-life who he struggling to climb his way up the social ladder. It won him his second Filmfare nomination.
