What is quick release coupling?
Also known as quick connect fitting, a quick release coupling is nothing but a coupling that is used to provide a fast, make or break connection between the fluid transfer lines. These devices are used in wide variety of industries like plumbing, heating, electrical, fire suppression systems and so on.
How does it work?
The mechanism of the quick releases coupling is that, when inserted the tubing into a connection mechanism, it deploys the fastening jaws onto the tubing surface. So, when the force is applied from the opposite side to the union, the jaws penetrate further into the tubing. This prevents the separation of the union. Since it can be easily used, and learning this is not rocket science, it has found its use in a lot of industries. This device offers considerable time saving benefits when in comparison with the traditional methods. When a coupling does not leak when it is not connected, it would be preferred for all applications, for the obvious reasons. Other factors remain the same anyways. For this, when a shutoff valve can be incorporated, it would be allowing in with one of the half or both coupling to let out the fluid. So, in this case, when the mechanical link between the couplings is disconnected, the mechanical link between them gets broken. This caused the valves to close, and thus the flow gets blocked completely.
When only one of the half of the quick release coupling is valved, it is located on the source of the joint. Th pneumatic systems usually employ this kind of setup, where the coupling half prevents the air loss from the system when the joint is disconnected. The unvaluved coupling half allows the downstream air to let go freely.
Depending upon the application it is used, the coupling may be subjected to vibration or relative rotation between the two halves when being pressurized. In many of the cases, these conditions will shorten the life of the coupling, as it causes the leakage or difficulties in terms of connection as well as disconnection.
